Upgrading my CPU
I have an AMD Sempron 2600+ in a machine i want to use for some stuff which needs some better speed.
Anyway can anybody suggest some good CPU's that are not too costly. Preferably higher end but keep the price under £150 |

Do you want to upgrade just the cpu, or the mobo as well? Depending on the socket (745 or A) you should be able to upgrade with an athlon or athlon 64 that fits the appropriate socket. Your budget would allow you to purchase an athlon 64 3700+ if you have socket 754.
It might be useful to know what the rest of your system specs are and what you plan to use the computer for though. Sometimes RAM or a video card will give more performance, depending what you are planning to do.

Processor AMD Athlon(tm) XP/MP/4 1837MHz
Display Card ATI RADEON 9600 Series Memory 512MB Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Free Disk Space 23.2GB Display Card Memory 128MB Display Driver Version 6.14.10.6387 DirectX Version 9.0c Optical Drive CD/DVD Sound Card Realtek AC97 Audio Thats what i got from some net tool. If you got a better tool to find out socket count and etc let me know so i can get a detailed outlook on what i can upgrade too. Also a 3700+ 64 bit processor would be amazing ![]() Last edited by DX Host : October 28th, 2005 at 01:03 PM. |

Looks like the Socket A version, in which case the fastest you'll get is the Athlon XP 3200+, I believe. Its pretty cheap too. If you want more than that, you'll have to look at a motherboard upgrade as well.

it would be one hell of a lot easier to use CPUz. that'll give you the motherboard make. the number of DIMM slots, and the socket.
form the sandra stuff all i can tell is what CPU you have (but not what socket it is). use CPUz . |

right,
- a Socket A CPU. - budget of £150. id say go with an Athlon XP-Moblie 2600+ for £77 (these are great overclockers btw). low voltage and unlocked multiplyers .it'll need a heatsink, but for overclocking you'd want a new one instead of a makny stock one anyway. The family of cpu's you can upgrade to are the "Athlon XP", or another socket A sempron, as I said before. If you are interested in overclocking, definitely look at a mobile XP like Dev.H Anubis said. If you don't want to mess with that, a 3200+ (did they make a 333fsb 3400+? unsure) would be the fastest you could get.

im no sure about US stocking, but here in the UK neither OcUK (best for stock and quality components) and eBuyer (our equivalent of NewEgg for masses of choice and great deals) don't have high end Socket A's.
i don't think eBuyer had any, and OcUK only had the Mobiles. there might be some store that still stocks them though... |

You can find them on pricewatch.com, but they are definitely becoming harder to find.
edit: bah, forgot he's not shopping from US. They do have some at ebay UK Last edited by karsh44 : November 2nd, 2005 at 11:42 AM. |

I am running a Sampron 2800+ and had a lot of problems with slowness until I changed the processor to Athlon 2500+ and increased the power Unit from 200w to 500w and added another Video Card 128Mb as I already had a Radeon 9600 256Mb and that did wonders I also increased the RAM from 256Mb to 2X 1 Gb and I would say it has tripled the original speed I am trying to configure my Pc to suit Civilization IV as I enjoyed Civ 3 for about three years have found it is completely different. I hope this helps but your will need a bit more then 150 Pounds ynot_07 |
