Diff between Athlon and Sempron Processors...

    Hey all,

I wonder if someone can help me. I have two machines, one has a amd athlon 2000+ in it and the other has a sempron 2600+ in it. However according to PCWizard the Freq of each of these is as follows:

    Athlon: 1666 (current: 1660)
    Sempron: 1466 (current: 1825)

I don't understand why the sempron current freq is so much higher than what is stated...? and it is here my prob lies, which is better cus the athlons stated freq seems to be better but semprons current is better...im confused..am i missing something and being really stupid??

Thanks to anyone who can help me understand this !

I'm not really familiar with that software, so I don't know what it is referring to with the "stated" frequency. However, the actual frequency is correct for a Socket A Sempron 2600+. Clock speed aside, the Sempron will give better performance.

as karsh44 said, a Socket A Sempron 2600+ should run at 1833MHz, as for whats faster, I'm not so sure that those few extra hertz will make that big of a difference, an Athlon is a much better CPU, its has a bigger cache and has more extensions, semprons are designed more towards low power and low price, not for speed as the Athlons are, i will say that the sempron will be faster, but not by too much, the bigger cache and make a big difference

The cache is the same size for both, and the Sempron has a faster fsb. The 2000+ is based on the older Palomino core, the Sempron on the newer Thoroughbred-B. A 2600+ XP vs a 2600+ Sempron would go to the XP, but in this case the Sempron is superior.

downlaod and run PC-Mark2002 . which ever CPU get's a higher score, you keep .

i'd expect the Athlon to do a good deal better though.

well, i pulled them out to change over and found out that actually the athlon is a xp2600 !! So that is faster, it was just setup incorrectly in the bios! Aaaaaaaaargh! So it is running at the correct speed and giving a better output than the sempron so i am going to be putting that one on ebay
