Align something on the right with CSS w/o Float
I want to align the links and such long box on the right, but I don't want to use float because then it won't push down the footer on the page accurately if you know what I mean. Thanks..

also i'd like to take a little room off around the edges (header and footer images), especially on the right side, while still maintaing the position of the right background so that the shadow part stays with it.

I've taken a look at the page linked in your first post.
I haven't understood what you want to align to the right: is it something that already exists in that page?
Has 'it' to stay over the violet background or over the dotted one?

You'll notice that when the main background (defined in the blog.css file) which is dotted, intersects with the main content area, it has a slight shadow. I want to keep that shadow aligned even though I want to make less room to the right of the main banner on the top (and the entire) content area.
edit: also, the sidebar is really on the bottom, and I want it on the side without using float.
