Background not working. unsure whats causing it

I am learning css. just created a page and am just throwing images and random text in it to make a frame. I have a section just under my banner/logo area that "was displaying black and would not go away no matter what I did. Removed all reset code in css. I made all items that were assigned black to white, now that space is white. changed items back to black and it is still white

in image the black part circled in red should be up top or gone completely, making my right side bar to move down. I've chaged pretty much everything it still remains. can just start over since there is not much code, but I want to see the fix in case I run into it again. Going to keep working on it and will post if I fix it.
