    IE / Firefox positioning problem

    Good evening ladies and gents,

    This is my first post so I thank you guys for your help in advance, I usually just do trial and error with CSS untill it works but this one has me puzzled.

    on my website www/CanadaFinance/net the sidebar isnt aligning the same on IE and Firefox. In Firefox it aligns how I want it but in IE its far too left, the reason is the way <UL> is being treated by each browser.

    Can anyone teach me how to fish and get this problem fixed? Thanks.

    Welcome to DevShed, Kirkland

    The first thing you should do before troubleshooting any further is validate your code; make sure you pass it. If you fix that and the problem persists, then you can more assuredly blame the CSS. Do that and get back to us.

    By the way, did you say you want to learn how to fish?

    Add borders to these two selectors:
    - #sidebar ul
    - #sidebar li

    You should see what the problem is. There is no reason for needing -30px on the left margin of the ul tag if you design the unordered list properly.

    margin-left:0px;
    padding:0 0 0 0;

    Solved the problem awesomely.

    For some reason I.E. accepted margin-left for ul however firefox only accepted padding 0, live and learn.

    Thanks for the direction, and noticing you're Canadian if you're at all interested in finance keep an eye on the site .

    I just might, Kirkland.

    By the way, to extend on the tips Kravvitz linked you to, I offer this advice:

    If you find yourself using negative margins a lot, there's a good chance there are flaws in your design. This is one critical bit of information I came by through experience. It's something I am always conscious of when writing CSS. Sure enough, they are rarely ever needed.
