Dealing with overflowing with tables (CSS)

With <div>, when text is larger than the tale div you can use the overflow attribute. How do you that with tables?

I tried overflow: auto with tables, but it just won't work. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Look into white-space. However, I believe different browsers treat this differently.

you guys know how when you type text in a textarea just like this one and don't press enter. you will end up with a table that is longer than the supposed width. But this forum (Devshed) does not do that. how do you do that? I don't want to use overflow because it really mess up with the general height of the tables.

oh..so what you want to do is have a set character count, like say 60, then once those characters exceed 60, go down to the nect line? that what you want?

if so look at this webpage:
    text are counter

it may give you some ideas.
