    How to use :not in navbar

    I have a horisontal navbar. I want to have a border-right: 1px solid black on every li, except the last. And I want to have a border-left: 1px solid white on every li, except the first.

    How is the best way to do this? I've been trying to make use of the :not pseudo element, but without success:

    #nav li:not(#nav li:first-child)
    {
    border-left: 1px solid white;
    }

    Just to be clear, I want to know how to do this with the :not-pseudo element. I know of other ways to do this, but Im curious how to solve this problem with :not.
