You don't need a fax machine to get faxes. Get a fax-to-email fax number from CallWave. Try it free.

I am a newbie at database design and I am trying to design a database to hold information about DVDs and keep track of rental information. I have sets of DVDs that have multiple discs that can be rented individually.
I plan to have a table that keeps track of customer info, DVD info, and a table to keep track of who rented what. So the question is: in the case of multiple-disc set DVDs that can be rented out individually to different customers, how should I keep track of them in the DVD info table? Should I track each disc in the set as an individual disc? In other words, one ID for each disc? This solution seems wasteful because for each disc, all of the info about the DVD will be the same except the ID. Or should I create another table to keep track of the discs? Any help will be greatly appreciated thanks! |

Well, I'd choose between these two ways
Messy Way 1) have the unique id just increment and tag an "i" or some other character to the end of that or another field to see if it is multiple discs or A Little Better 2) have the unique id be an autoincrementing column, and have a separate column for number of discs, because some dvd's have up to 3 discs coming with them nowadays.... Just another sugguestion. I'm not sure if you were saying that the dvd and customer tables were the same table or not, i just saw "a table that keeps track of customer info, DVD info, and a table to keep track of who rented what" Why don't you just have two tables. One for customers, and then one for videos. A column under the videos table could hold the unique id of the customer who rented it and a time stamp column for time of rental and then you can check when it's do back and etc then. Plus that makes it easier for upgrades like if you have two stores, you can just have a store table and add a column under videos to see which video goes to what store etc. I'm not sure how you'd do it as one big table, that sounds kinda messy. |
