Database design software
I have seen others use software that allows you "map" out database design. At least one I saw even would write the "create table (..." queries.
I would like support for MySQL and PosgreSQL if possible, but I am looking for something that is a bit easier than the legal pad and pen method. Any recomendations? I would prefer something that works in Mac OSX or Windows 9x/XP.

I haven't found any at reasonable prices. ErWin & Visio Enterprise are good in a W32 environment, but are priced $1K and up.

Visio Enterprise sounds familiar. I was planning on spending $150 - 200, but $1000 is a little much for me at the moment.

One very nice tool imo that is also open source is dbdesigner 4. http://www.fabforce.net/dbdesigner4/
It works with MySQL, Oracle, MSSQL and any ODBC databases (should include PostgreSQL in there). It works on both Windows and Linux which is bonus as well. |

There's no comparison: DeZign for Databases by Datanamic (http://www.datanamic.com/) can't be beat for the price ($150).

Thank you. I will try bedesigner first, its free and what do I have to lose? I will check out DeZign too. Sounds like its about what I am looking for if dbdesigner doesn't work.

There's an interesting project for an open source database deisgner at http://tedia2sql.tigris.org/. It uses Dia, which is mainly aimed at Linux/Unix, but I believe it can work under Windows with cygwin, or possibly Mac OS X.

I am playing around with dbdesigner now on Win 98SE via Virtual PC on my iBook. Seems to work great for what I need. Its pretty much exactly what I am looking for, but I will take a look at tedia too. Leave no program out of the question
