How come MySQL is so widely used? Database Management forum discussing non-database specific SQL. Structured Query Language was designed to be a robust and standardized language for manipulating relational databases.

heh, well actually I didn't start the thread. That's what was intersting (to me anyway) I've seen it happen before on a vBulletin; the thread got started, but the original post isn't there, strange. Actually, there is a duplicate just like this one, but I couldn't find it with a quick search.

Anyway, I agree. Being free and extremely easy to use has helped to make it popular.

In addition to free and easy, I've noticed that a lot of hosting services include it as the back-end db for web sites.

It is often included in the mid-sized service package deals, and sometimes even some of the bare-bones deals.

Well for people who don't know much about databases MySQL is a good learning tool, just like MS Access. For websites where there is a large amount of selects and not many/hardly any inserts or updates (ie website) it is a good database to use.

If you are running a site which has quite a few inserts and updates aswell as selects( ie forum), then it doesn't go that well and databases like Firebird SQL and PostgreSQL really shine. My personal choice is always PostgreSQL.

Simple, easy, realiable, and fast.

Why we use it to manage user/customer data at our company. Granted the MySQL crowd sacrficed features for speed.
