LDAP returning set amount of records

Hi I'm trying to find out if there is a way I can limit the amount of records returned from ldap and also be able to pick up where I left off. I know of sizelimit which you can apply and it'll return only that amount but then I want to be able to start at that record and continue. Any suggestions? (I'm using PHP but in any language would be fine)

(if you don't understand me well nither do I just ask and I'll try to explain better)

Can't you just retrieve all records into an array and then "page" it?
