Need Pointers Using Queries

I need some help PLEASE! I frequently use the vlookup function in Excel and I need to something similar to that in Access. I am writing a query to find certain max values of a table, but I need it to not only give me the value but the name associated with the value.. and i need this to update as often as the linked spreadsheet (my table) does. I found a function called domain lookup..is this what I should use? I need some help with this function.
