Wink Sybase ASE 12.5.0.1 Developer Edition Out
The Developer Edition of ASE 12.5.0.1 is available for download from
http://www.sybase.com/ase_125devel

There is both an NT and a linux version.

The developer edition is a full featured version of ASE, with *all* the optional features turned on. It is limited to 25 user connections, and a single engine. And it's free.

LOL, no problem. It shouldn't be *that* hard to install and get running. Like anything there *is* a learning curve but once you know how to do it you can get it up and running from scratch fairly quickly.

Yeah, but then you have the "let's play with it a bit" phase. That's what really eats up the time .

Rod they don't officially. Sybase ASE 11.0.3.3 will 'work' on BSD if you use the linux emulation thingy and do a tweak or two. I am not sure about ASE 11.9.2 or 12.5, but I would suspect it *may* work with the same linux emu layer.

True, "anything" will work in linux emu, but I've had nothing but trouble when I use linux emu, stability mainly. I'll stick with postgres for now.

When postgres gets it's inheritence problems resolved, I'll be a very happy camper.

Yes, this is my biggest beef about the "Big 3" DBMS vendors. But, I don't mind using Slackware Linux, since it is very similar to FreeBSD, so I have a test box to evaluate these commercial thingies.

So far, I have found almost no reason not to use PostgreSQL for all my software, but I want to be prepared for those clients who require Oracle, SyBase, or DB2.

The way I figure it, if I am going to be responsible for some sort of large scaleable system, the clustered webservers will be running FreeBSD, hands down, but I wouldn't mind the database server(s) layer running on Linux, as long is it can be something sensible like SlackWare. Thus all the real development would still happen on FreeBSD, while Linux would only have ONE job to do .
