If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft's MSDE is for the most part identical to SQL Server minus a few of the "enterprise" features like replication and the maximum size of the database. Another difference is that its throttled to only allow a few connections at a time (I think 5).
So I would guess that the "speed" of MSDE is probably comparable to the published performance measurements of SQL Server.
