DB2 Compared to MySQL?

I know this may sound like a strange comparison. DB2 is a commercial product. It must be a lot better than MySQL.

I consider myself a database guru in that I've probably delt with all the major databases out there except for DB2. A client of ours who is using MySQL at this point asked to be moved to DB2. So I'm just doing research at this point to find out the many features DB2 might have and what kind of tools we can use to make our life easier.

Any suggestions are welcome.
By the way the OS platform is Linux.

Thanks!

Db2 is very full-featured - an Enterprise-class DBMS comparable to Oracle or SQL Server. See this link:
http://www-136.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/
for tons of info.

Also www.idug.org will have some good reading.

Exclamation Widen your scope

DB2 versus MySQL? What about Sysbase, SQL Server 2000 etc etc

One or two examples :-

"We tested IBM's DB2 7.2 with FixPack 5, Microsoft Corp.'s SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 2, MySQL AB's MySQL 4.0.1 Max, Oracle Corp.'s Oracle9i Enterprise Edition 9.0.1.1.1 and Sybase Inc.'s ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) 12.5.0.1.

Overall, Oracle9i and MySQL had the best performance and scalability..."

- http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/features.html Database Server Feature Comparisons

- Whats missing is an essential element - the cost (quids, bucks, mullah etc) Oracle, DB2, SQL Server are enterprise solutions where a five digit sum could be charged per cpu. You can see why Google or Yahoo for example choose MySQL.

teki, you obviously know something about databases. and I thank you for sharing that with us.

I wan't asking which database is the best or most economical. If it were up to me, I would never go with DB2 since it's the only major db that I haven't dealt with. As funny as it sounds, the customer had a strong preference for DB2 for whatever reason and does not like to be challenged on this. So I look at it as learning something new without paying for it myself, so why not?

..and I am merely responding to the inquiry, as the requirement seems to be DB2 in this case. All of the afore-mentioned DBMS software is good; each has strong points and not so strong points along all the various parameters of the what database should I use equation....and DB2 knowledge is a good addition to your toolkit.

This DB2 "cookbook" site is a good reference also:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/graeme_birchall/HTM_COOK.HTM

MySQL is a damned fine RDBMS. It has lacked some features, and I am happy to see it catching up quickly.

No database wars here, please. We are all oft in situations where there is a mandate for database X beyond our control and we make the best of it and ask for assistance when needed..

Question

For your signature query there is a sticky in the Lounge.

Yeah right i wasn't about to start a db war but only suggesting cost awareness as part of the decision making process. You get these MD type dudes who want technology X without being aware of all the parameters.

What business/type is the client? What sort of systems do other similar businesses run? Is a budget in place for this?

I asked a question about not being able to edit my signature and teki pointed me to a post in the Lounge, which answered my question.

MySQL compare DB2

Hello itonet
rsun@itonetworks.com

Check out 1.2 MySQL database in "MySQL to DB2 UDB Conversion Guide"
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247093.pdf

I realize it is from the IBM point of view but it seems like an excellent place to start since you already know MySQL

"No one ever got fired for buying IBM. "

DB2, like another poster already stated, is comparable to Oracle or MSSQL in terms of features and performance.

More importantly, though, what is your client using MySQL for? Web database? Data center? Intranet applications? What application development language is being used in conjunction with the database?

Certain databases are better suited to certain tasks; more information would be helpful.
