Talking to SCSI tapedrives

Bit of a newb question from a watcher here, but does anyone know how to talk to a SCSI tape drive via SPI and not using Device Open/read/write etc.? I know the scsi commands quite well, and have operated stuff using ASPI before, but I just can't figure out the SPI (or SPTI) ??
