How to confirm a computer is available on network?
My program uses a Firebird DB server, and I would like to check the network to see if the server computer is present before launching my connection. This would enable me to report errors more effectively to the user. Instead of just saying that the database connection failed, I could say that the network connection to the DB server computer is not available.
The FB Server could be runnig on any computer (including linux) and there may not even be any shared folders on it. FB Srever uses TCPIP so I suspect the solution would have to be TCPIP related? Is there a way Delphi6 can ping the server to confirm it is there?
Thankyou for your help.

The ICS component suite from www.overbyte.be comes with a ping component. Also, his component set has the advantage of being free .
