Not a clue, it is almost like it decides that someone has defended in the previous round of combat and it had better be you.

i'm guessing it does a random roll against your evade and if that fails a random role against your defence, be nice to know the mechanics of it.

Yes and no ... on the technical side I'd like to know the hows whys, as a player I just need to know that the system works and is fair (or fair enough).

I had the same thing happen in a recent battle. If you check- even though the text says you defended, the damage was still applied to your character correctly. There is a bug there, but I'm not too concerned about it.
