Also I've noticed I get gems for certain odd things, for example if I use the private outhouse, I normally get 3 gold back and then I've found some gems on the ground

The dread pirate also dropped some

Hmm- good idea with the private restroom. I'd been using the free one, but since I value the chance at a gem more than the gold that's definitely the way to go. Especially since it really only costs 2gp a lot of the time.
