yeah, when i owned a punch it defaulted to that but i nearly always missed with it so sold the damn thing

How about having a "Challenge this person" type link on the user name drop down menu or the "View Extended RPG Stats" page. Then it could take you to the create battle page with their player name pre-filled in. Maybe if they don't have an arena fighter setup they could receive a pm saying "You've been challenged in the Arena, why not create an account".

That would be a lot easier than my current method of copy/paste name from a thread to battle screen ...! Also, may be nice to have a "In battle <battle #/name> in the pop up stats window.

This is now done from the username dropdown menu.
