$100,000 Tech Makeover
So I saw TechTV is giving away a $100,000 tech makeover to some lucky winner. That's a nice load of cash. I really don't know if I could spend it all (okay, I could)...
Just wondering, what are some of the things you would definitely buy if you won? Remember, it has to be "tech" related... ---John Holmes... |

Some obvious stuff:
*New set of computers/servers for my house *The biggest Sony plasma XBR TV available *Surround sound system to go with my TV *Can I use it for a year's subscription for a dedicated fat pipe to my house for my computers around a T3 should be fine ![]() I'd be good with that and just donate the rest for a local inner city school to get some new computer equipment. -b

I would probably get me a nice RS6000 to play around on and of course the latest and greatest PC, Mac and laptop on the market. Then I would need to set up 802.11G for the wireless.
Of course I would need a large plasma, 60" should do fine. Might even blow a little on a game system or two. Not to mention all of the different software I would get. You didn't give you list John... ![]() |

I'd get me the fastest Celeron I can find and the best motherboard with integrated Video and Sound money can buy!!
Seriously, 60" plasma screens all around, a rack full of server with each major OS I can find and a 20 to 1 (or so) KVM box so I don't have to leave my chair and a ton of books and magazines. Speaking of chairs, can I get one of those leather chairs with the massage wheels and everything in it? I'd be sitting in it to do tech work, so I think it would count. I am a stereo and hifi buff so I would spend about half of it on amps, speakers and home theatre stuff. The rest would be on:
Apple iMac 17 inch Powerbook G4 A nicely spec'ed PC with Windows XP 2 x Server for running network. I don't know what I will do with any leftover cash... Last edited by a.koepke : June 23rd, 2003 at 06:46 PM. |

I came across an interesting device in a magazine that I hadn't seen before. It's a box that'll let you remote your monitor, keyboard, mouse, mic, and speakers up to 500' away from your computer using a single ethernet (cat5) cable. It ran around $500, though.
If there was some way to combine this with a KVM box, that'd be awesome. You could have a rack full of computers locked up somewhere and just remote your control out to the desk. The computers would be secure but you could work from your desk. How great would this be to use in a company if you were in charge of the computers? All of the computers could be kept in one place and you just run cat5 cable and this box to the user's desk. Now they can't touch the computer to do anything to it and upgrades would be easier because you have all of the computers together. ---John Holmes... I'd get myself one of them fully loaded g5 - running around 14k usd, and of them powerbooks too got about 3 grand, and a bit of 44" plasma screen for 3k and just several entry server machines and 2 gigabit fiber array of hdds and 2 pcs.
And then I would sell half of that for cash and buy a damn car! I'd keep macs thou... |

I'd say it would be time to finally put my recording studio together.
- Mac G5, dual proc, oh... about 3 GB RAM, and 1 TB of disk space - All the audio software that runs on a Mac, including soundforge, ProTools, etc... I suppose I would have to toy around with some video editing stuff too, so I would get a copy of Shake - Roland Guitar synthesizer kit, a few high-end DSP modules, and a couple full-duplex audio cards. - Gigabit ethernet, Gigabit switch, a few hundred hards of cable, patch panels, crossovers, rack, etc... - FreeBSD or NetBSD fileserver on a slightly used DEC Alpha, running Vinum to cluster about 10 TB worth of hard drives as one volume. (Hey, half the fun would be just seeing if I could get that to work )- Linux desktop machine running on a dual Xeon with 4 GB RAM, to toy around with all the Linux audio stuff in development. - SCSI RAID 10 on everything. Oh, and I guess I would have to convince the wife to sell our house (equity is good at the moment) and buy a bigger place, where I could outfit one room (or two) as the sound studio. ... (sigh... OK, OK...) I suppose $100,000 could nicely purchase 200 low-end iMacs to send to a few orphanages Haiti and India (no, it's not any particular preference for nationalities; I just happened to meet the guys running these two orphanages). Or maybe 100 iMacs and a $50,000 recording studio... Hey, I could live with compromise... (Heh, it's always easy to say these things when you don't have the money in hand, isn't it? I just hope I would do something right.) P.S. (looking at bcyde's link): 13 CRT monitors? Yikes! If I were that guy, I would consider investing in flat-screens. Just think of all the UV radiation in that room .

If you've got 13 screens of surround flight sim, you don't need kids, and your life has been fullfilled enough already you can die happy, early.

But... but... why are we all gushing about the Mac G5? "Everybody knows" Apple is dying, because it "just can't compete" with the Wintel or Linux market.
Go ahead, be daring, "invest in a dying platform". You'll regret it. ![]() |
