Address book showing up in a file named '~'

For a little over a month now (when I first noticed it) i'll see a file
either on my desktop (win2k) or in the C: root with a filename
of tilde (~). The contents are my address book in binary form.
I thought it was a glitch on my machine until my friend told me
that it was happening to him as well.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Question

Could you be a little more specific (e.g. is it a file name with a ~ (tild) within the name (e.g. for ... Erm...say ... Program Files is Progra~1 being displayed) or is the entire file name ~,

a good tip for discovering a description of a file is:
open the windows explorer & right mouse click on the file & left mouse click on properties, do this & mail me back & tell me what is displayed.

The same file is showing up on my desktop. The entire file name is "~". Properties Plus shows the following info on this file:

Type: File
Pathname: C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\~
Size: 194KB ( 198,254bytes) 229,376bytesAllocated/FAT32
MS-DOS path: C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\~

Has been happening for about a month now. Somewhere about a dozen times. I have been deleting the file on these occasions.
I'm quite curious about this event. Any light that can be shed on this would be welcomed. Thank you for your time. EMO

file named ~

Good to know this is happening to someone else. I guess it started a few months ago -- not really sure. April or May 2003? I keep getting rid of it and it keeps reappearing. I wonder if this has anything to do with another recent development -- Outlook Express deletes my blocked senders list every time I close it -- very annoying. I'm also using Win 2K by the way, but have been for many months.

Jon
