Advice on solutions to Piracy?
Has anybody been in a situation with an open-source project (GPL) where somebody has taken your code and modified all references to the authors' names, and the product name, but left the remainder of the actual code totally unchanged; passing it off as their own work?
If so, what was your response to the situation?

Hey Mark
![]() It depends... If it was a money making venture, then i'd write them a legal letter/email.... Seach around for fre elegal stuff online.. there's a ton of it If its on a script page, then feel free to email them. I know if i had some stuff like that on a site like mine, i'd remove it, or replace teh credits. If its a script that's running, the best bet is to mail the host, and tell them about the flagrant abuse of copyright, and that as teh host, they are responsible for it ![]() See ya around mate.... You are covered by copyright from the moment you create your work, if it's copied then they are in breach of copyright regulations. This is the same for most of the world.
If I was in the position you are then I'd send an email advising them to reinstate the copyright and make sure that the correct author was represented. If they fail to do so then I would weigh up the possibilities of taking it to a legal challenge. If they are making money out of the passing off other peoples' work as their own then legal procedings should be carried out. Remember, you woulnd't be doing that just for yourself, but for others who try to honestly come up with a money spinning idea. |
