AMD Chip Reports 1/2 Speed?
I have this crummy HP laptop I bought from crummy Best Buy (who, incidentally, still has not given me my $150 rebate and, in fact, apparently can't even verify such a rebate exists even though I have in my possession a form from them which says so). Everywhere I look it is listed as a mobile 1.53 GHz Athlon XP 1800+ processor. However, Windoze XP only reports MY chip as a 654 MHz processor and the bloody thing is sluggish as hell sometimes. Is it a normal phenomenon for WinXP to misreport chip speeds or is someone trying to rip me off?
The other thing... It has 32MB of shared video memory. It supposedly came with 256 MB of RAM to start, I dropped in another 256 MB wafer, but it only reports 448 which totals 480. You mean to tell me I lost one of the chips on that board within a month of owning the computer (4 chips per side: Two 2 sided boards)? (Sorry, that last paragraph is more of a complaint about chintzy memory than anything). |

What does the bios report as the chip speed?

It sounds like the bios is not setup correctly.
Download the AMD CPUID utility and test it yourself http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/con...ies/cpuinfo.exe Let us know what it reports. |

wow!
What is the model of the HP laptop? Also, Sleeve's CPUID is your best bet for a no-nonsense test. If the CPU is faulty you can take it to Best Buy and shove it up their ginger a$ses.
Damn it! That CIO's got to pay!!! mwaaaaaaaaahhh!! nao =-=-=-=-=-= THE BESTBUYTRIX =-=-=-=-=-= Nao: Hey, mister, I got this laptop from your store and it works at half speed! CIO: Nao: What do you mean "have you applied for a rebate?" I tried to take it into the store where I picked it up and your customer services told me I couldn't get a rebate at the store because I ordered it online... CIO: Nao: Don't roll your eyes at me muthaf*cka! CIO: ![]() Nao: ...see this?! THIS, IS MY BOOM STICK! COME HERE! CIO: ![]() [to be continued...] Next issue: The Plyer twins, "sawtooth" and "wiresnipper" get medieval on CIO's face! |

Yep, definitely look around in the bios for a setting that lets you bring the cpu up to 133mhz that will change the clock setting on the chip.
Either someone at the factory screwed up, or your bios got reset somehow. I've seen this happen on mobo's where the mobo battery was crapping out, or the bios needed to be flashed. ECS motherboards had the same problem

Thanks for the tips mates - No bios settings pertaining to the CPU ('least that I could find).
The AMD probe, however, reports between 1290 and 1440 with the most reports hovering around 1320. I don't think it's the battery, I don't really have any other problems that would indicate that. Shall I try to flash the bios, ya think? |

rebate?
Chris,
Can you get a rebate on the laptop? (don't tempt me man...) I wouldn't flash it if you can because you should just get a refund and spend your money elsewhere. The flash may not necessarily yeild better access to the CPU/Clock frequency settings - does it say anything about that in the documentation for the new BIOS image you're going to flash? Computers... WHY SO MANY PROBLEMS! nao |

It's a laptop. Are you sure it isn't using some kind of speed-stepping thing as a power saver? The way the intel speed-stepping works is it runs the CPU at a lower clock speed to conserve power- mayhap mobile athlons do as well?

And we have a winner!
That's what it's doing. Thanks Hero! |
