American closed source
Hi all
This last month we've seen companies playing in the amerikan stock market as they like: fooling people (Enron, Xerox, Andersen, ...). Ok that's good for the rest of the world, as they can realize that the yankee empire is not such as good, great and fantastic as they thought. Maybe it's all a smoke courtain ... The European Union is supporting Open Source iniciatives against propietary software (leaded by Microsoft). They do in order to avoid the paying of the sofware licenses to american companies. Also, to support european software development and innovation, not depending of the wills of some US lobbies that can manage its government as they like. Now that (1 USD == 1 EUR) == true, what's next? Hahahaha !! EU software will be more secure, trustable, confidental, and privacy aware that US/MS exported software. DMCA, Intellectual Property, Copyright issues (hey, I recorded silence in 1984, so when you say nothing, you have to pay me the royalties) and some other bizarre things make the "land of the freedom" (irony) to be one of the top 5 countries not to be visited by really good developers. Yep, I can assure that I'll never go to the States, and I know you staters are happy for me not to go, but the world supremacy countdown for the US has begun. Well, at least you have the Army to go agains 3rd world countries ...

Heh, what's this? Trying to start a war? Pissed coz Spain were thrown out of the fotball world championship by the referees?
I should probably avoid taking a bite here, but just a little something: The US might not be perfect, but what country is? EU definitly has it's flaws as well... Peace //NoXcuz

EU is far from perfect, but I must admit that I am seriously considering seeking employment outside of the good old US of A because of our lawmakers' apparent urgency to soothe the "wounds" of "victimized" big business leaders.
Microsoft is over here basically thumbing its nose at the Deparment of Justice and the entire judicial system (the lawyers' closing remark at one hearing was a snide comment to the judge that Microsoft would only consider restructuring of a settlement if it was restructuring of the penalties that have already been imposed on them, but not enforced yet). Enron, Worldcom, Xerox, Adelphia, and other big companies are running rampant across the financial landscape raping and plundering the retirement funds, benefits, and wages of their employees / retirees to feed the greedy pigs-in-suits at the top of the ladder. Eventually, they get so fat the ladder breaks and the debris crushes all the little people that were holding it up to begin with. Lawmakers are scrambling to clamp down on "piracy" with laws that would seriously injure, if not DESTROY the entire open source initiative in this country. And to top things off, Microsoft is trying to blindside an initiative that's been underway for an awful long time with their stupid Palladium idea... let's see... I'm going to trust my personal data to a company that embedded snooping software in Media Player.... yea... right. I'm sorry, but the capitalist system over here is great.... for everything except the technology sector it seems. I've always thought Australia looked nice anyway.... |

Really? Europe? The last time I checked linux was built from a wide range of developers from across the globe?
If you are talking about the creator(s) of Linux (Linus Torvalds), he is Finnish, but then again, where does he reside? The US (California to be exact) http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/torvalds/. I would say that probably one of the most popular Linux version in the world is RedHat wouldn't you? Where is it based out of? US (North Carolina to be exact) http://www.redhat.com/about/. Am I defending the politicians, lawyers and corrupt ceos that have damaged our economy? No, but I will defend the country because I am proud to live where I do with the freedoms that I have. No one is perfect, no one every will be. The point is to strive to be the best you can. People with unscrupulous morals are not restricted to the United States, they are found in every nation in abundance. That is humon nature unrestricted by race/sex or any other racial boundry. I have traveled the world, and plan to do so again, but I will always be proud to live where I do and be a citizen of the US. |

Hmmm interesting post, obviously not every country in this world is perfect, least of all Spain and the EU, they obviously need to put a little more effort into teaching people how to speak and type in English correctly
![]() At the end of the day everyone has an opinion about foriegn countries, and every single country has a flaw somewhere. I am a Brit and I'm a proud one, but I base my proudness on the basis of what my nation has achieved, simple as that. I think everyone in their right mind would pretty much stand up and defend their country. To say one country is better or worse than another is pathetic, and to be quite honest so is this thread. Some examples; Iraq - Terrorists Afghanistan - Terrorists America - World Supreme Beleif England - Illegal Immigrants Ireland - IRA Spain - ETA France - Worst ever World Cup Trophy Defence Iceland - To bloody Cold Brazil - To much Crime Argentina - Out of control Russia - Broke So would any of those factors sway your decision into taking a job or not? I'd say you'd be pretty stupid if you did. If you are getting paid well, you would be happy, you wouldn`t be in fear of your life then it doesn`t matter where you live to work. As Onslaught said, this life is about striving to be the best you can at whatever it is you do and enjoying yourself along the way. Just my tuppence worth

I think MY part of this thread may have come out in the wrong way... I'm restricting my complaints to the open source community that this country's fat cats are straining so hard to shut the door on. If I have to defend my country as a good place to live and work overall you best get the hell out of my way
America is a great place to live and work overall (I'd rather live here than any other country), but it's just not looking too good when it comes to the technology sector. I fear while the rest of the world is taking a bunch of big leaps forward, the people in charge in this part of the world are going to try and turn our butts around and run back in the opposite direction. |
