annoying isn't the word
Has anyone actually managed to read the first two pages of any article since those stupid flashing advert banners appeared?
I know I can't and I wonder if this is why I come here once a week instead of daily now? Fair enough advertising is needed, but if an advert has to take up a third of the first two pages, does it have to flash? Neil |

Solutions
If it is an animated gif, you've got nothing to do, but if it is a flash animation, you can always right-click and stop it. This way it isn't so annoying.

Well, it is because of the pesky banners that sites like these are free for us. I'd rather learn to ignore the banners than not have them and pay to come here. And besides, why don't you just disable images from your browser if you don't like them?
BTW, you might want to edit your subject before freebsd comes along. It might not be the best descriptive subject this post could have.

Banners are inevitable... and I don't really have a problem with them. They don't harm the actual usefulness of Devshed - and if it bothers you that much, there's always the print view option, which cuts it down to 1 banner.

Not quite, menu can be disabled >>I know I can't and I wonder if this is why I come here once a week instead of daily now? uhm... because either a) you don't have time or b) you dont want knowledge, in all other cases you could make yourself ignore banners. >>you might want to edit your subject before freebsd comes along Datamike, for all the time you've been here you missed two things 1) one cannot change thread title once its posted 2) freebsd doesn't really mind this sort of title in the lounge Personally I think ads are not as bad as they may seem to majority of the internet, and as a matter of fact I try to click on ads whenever I can remember too hoping that it will help devshed and other sites I visit. It is sort of paying my respect to founders and giving something back to the community.

Actually you can press stop at the top of the browser to stop an animated gif. |

I can see your point about banner ads. I was going to put some on my site for cost purposes but have not found to many that are useful just waste of good content space.
I keep my site free and it will stay that way unless something drastic happens. I just like useful ads. but you see so many of the same things like junk mail right into the circular file with them. Good thing about Devshed banners atleast they deal with the type of content in the site not like other developement site with off topic garbage.

I don't think they detract at all. The site has to make some money, so I just ignore them. Hell, once in awhile I click on one, too.
What I really, really hate are those new f*****g ads that pop up and take up the entire screen and you can't stop them....those are so annoying. ---John Holmes... |

I'm with most everybody else here. The ads keep it free, so I'll learn to live with them. Besides, maybe one in a million will actually be something I'm interested in? Hey... never know.
If you REALLY want annoying, pop out to Lycos and try to do a search. Man, THAT will drive you nuts and get you used to these little banner ads in a HURRY. |

We would prefer not to have the larger ads on our site, but they are what advertisers want these days. It's either we have them, or we go out of business.
Sorry, guys. ![]()
