Are the pseudo title-banners necessary?
Jcaputo,
The layout of the forum is getting b0rked w/ the pseudo title-banner ads ... New DevShed Article: Professional File Transfer with proFTPD Find a Web Host at itsALLnet DevShed Articles & Tutorials etc etc Are these necessary? Couldn't there be a better way to advertise the content on itsAllNet and Devshed w/o turning the forum itself into a billboard? Maybe its just too much change all at once ... I don't know. The ads just give the forum a 'cheese' feel, though. Maybe I'll get used to it, but thats my initial impression... ![]()

Well, we all know that free sites need ad revenue. There was a
reason this site was purchased. I agree that it is still early and there are already more ads than like. I can deal with the top banners. but now you can tell that they are trying to shove ads wherever they can. It maybe too early to say this but, DevShed may be ruined. It doesn't even feel the same anymore. Perhaps moving on is the move for me... I'll hang in there DevShed....but I can tell that it won't be for much longer. I actually didn't notice the "find a host" one until it was pointed out. Doesn't make that big a deal to me, yet, as long as the community stays the way it is, I don't start having to close a bunch of popup windows, and navigating the forums doesn't become bothersome.

I am sorry you feel that way - but we did buy the site for business as well as enjoyment purposes - and the text additions are the only effective way to monetize the forums. Other than regular banner ads, Im all ears if you have some other suggestions. We tried to make them as unobstrusive as possible. We will never have -any- pop ups on the site, and we are working on reducing the size of the graphical ads as well.

Nah, it's all good. The text takes up next to no space, is unobtrusive, and serves a purpose: revenue generation.
Ruining the 'feel'? Come on. Nothing has changed, and if something as subtle as those advertisements bothers you, good luck finding another community of similar quality and size. Any place that has this much of a talent pool will either cost money, or have advertisements. In the past months, DevShed has had more than it's share of technical problems. Maybe the new buisiness model can scrape together enough cash to improve the site. |

I think those text ads in the main list of forums are fine- what I DON'T like is the extra row in the list of postings in a forum. I don't think they do a thing to accentuate different postings (the border does that fine). They just take up space.

I totally agree with Hero about the extra row in the forums themselves... I understand a site like this (with that mutch traffic) may need some banners/advertisement but I'd rather have some nice flashy banner at the top (as it is now) then rows with ads between te posts.. that's really annoying imo
PS. has the cellpadding (top/bottom) in the forums been changed? it looks bigger then the ones in the forum-overview (which I like more )regards

It is our goal -hopefully- with the revenues we hope to make from the text ads, to be able to afford a much needed upgrade to our dedicated servers (moving to 2 dedicated servers with a substantial upgrade in memory and processor speed). This should take place in a couple of months, and we are expecting the site at that time to run a heck of a lot faster and more reliable as well.

A switch off MySQL (if that's possible) would probably serve better than additional hardware muscle in this forum's case.... but that's just MHO.
I was actually coming in here to start a gripe session about the extra lines of advertising, but hey - it's free, so I'll put up with it. The first time a "floater" comes in that blocks part of the page, or I get a popup, however, I'm outta here (warning! hint! hint! warning!). As good as the content is, I haven't been back to some of the O'Reilly sites (read: xml.com) since my first visit because they had slide-in flash ads that blocked portions of the articles. Nothing irks me like that - even popups are livable to some extent, but those damned pop over ads that can't be gotten rid of.... ugh |

Believe me - there will NEVER be popups OR obnoxious flash ads which obscures content.

Code:
there will NEVER be popups OR flash ads //me looks at the Flash ad from Microsoft and wonders if I'm hallucinating LOL I don't mind Flash Ads as long as they're just normal banners. I use Mozilla on both my Windows laptop and my Linux desktop and I never bothered to install Flash on either of them. I just get a "click here to install the plugin" box when I see flash content. At work, I drop by now and then when I have the comp tied up doing something else (publish web site, compile, run app, etc.) but that's a fast connection so the Flash loads real quick and it's no issue. |

After reading the posts here I have decided to move the inner text ad from the middle of the page to the top of the page, so it does not interfere with the reading of the posts - and looks cleaner. I hope this helps. I might take a little pummelling from the advertising we just landed, but Id rather have the site easy to read, and clean - than not.
Thanks |
