Athlon Slot A ATX Power Supplies
Folks,
I had a power supply for a 700 mHz Athlon Slot A burn out on me. Are these things pretty standard? Can I just get another 300W ATX power supply and be done with it, or is there more I need to look into? I'm pretty sure any ATX power supply is OK, but I just wanted to double-check with the more hardware-focused among you. |

THG had a review last October: http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20021021/index.html
I'm not one of those guys who loves to blame the power supply for everything (you'll find one of those in every hardware forum), but it's something to be aware of and make your own judgement. I've had some mighty cheap power supplies and the worst I've had is a dead fan, which is easy enough to replace. The trick is putting your hand on the thing and surprising the hell out of yourself before it catches fire ![]() |

I went with a Powmax 300w, mainly because it was cheap and has two ball-bearing fans, which are USUALLY a sign of higher quality parts.
As an aside- I have this case/power supply combo and it is AWESOME. Quite, roomy, and very high quality. On sale at www.newegg.com ! |

I have something with the same basic specs on my Linux server (it just ain't pretty like that one) and I too have found it very pleasant to work with. I've obnoxiously big hands, and I didn't have any problems getting at the CPU, RAM, or any of the IDE hookups and cards. Only trouble is, mine is generic and it has the old style case where you have to slide the cover on the runners on both sides of the bottom of the chassis. Man, I hate those friggin things.....

lol - need a cheap file server -> http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...00%20P&CatId=31
Man - tiger has some good prices right now. You can get a mobo/cpu combo running 2ghz+ athlon for about 120 |

Woah. I might buy one of those optiplexes just to have it around as a spare. . . 466mHz isn't crap, for sure, especially running WindowMaker or no X at all.

Ya - that would be nice for a mini-file server or even an email server. I like the dell cases also, small and take up little space...

odd, spec sheet says it's a celeron, but the picture labeling says it's a pentium...not that they ever made a 466 pentium, but still.

I saw that, too, icrf. Not a biggie. Definitely make a good email server, and a few load balanced could handle a LOT of web traffic. Put together a high end machine for a DB server and you're set

My biggest problems with AMD chips has always been cooling. Granted most of our AMD machines are between 1 and 1.3Ghz from that generation that ran really really hot. We had to install extra PCI cooling fans on all of those units to keep the temp down.
I also recommend getting a larger power supply, like 400W. SOme of today's vid cards suck the juice these days. Damn, I wish I had an extra $500 right now. I have a Quad 533 Alpha machine here I got when we upgraded our render farm at work coupled with some 466 Celerons would host my site for a few years. |

The Slot A's especially seem to run hot. . . I went with 300W because this thing only has a TNT2 card and I will never upgrade it, as it's only a web/database server and hardly ever runs X anyway.
