so, what is the best way to advertise a website?

should i go for banner exchange, search engines (obviously), etc.

umm, also what are the pros and cons of different types?

Get it in the google directory and dmoz directory and the yahoo directory (could be same as googles).

Get as many inbound links as possible, and make sure its optimised.

I suggest a tastefully subtle signature image in all the forums that you visit.

Just buy one of those 16 million email address CD's and spam people to tell them, I am sure they would all be excited about your new site.

Pay for advertising pertinent to your web site :-)

Best way to advertise your site is to produce a good product and get people talking about you and recommending you. "Word of mouth" advertising is by far the best... and the cheapest!

If I had to pick the best way it would be to optimize your site for Google.

If you are impatiently awaiting their spider, then try swapping links with other related sites.

Need traffic NOW. Try pay per click search engines and banner advertising.

Got a creative streak, write an article and submit it to all the sites that accept article submission related to your topic. (include a link to your site in a resource box at the end.)
