Exclamation Beware of Volvo...

Read an announcement by Volvo saying that they've closed a deal with M$ which means that (some of) their cars will be powered by WindowsCE in a near future. Having used PDA's and thin clients powered by WinCE, I can only say that I'm not impressed. And I will definitly not buy or drive a car that is powered by WinCE....
Just image what can happen when you're cruising on a freeway and the computer box in your car decides to have a BSOD?
No way man...

I also remember a recent discussion in these forums about Windows powered cars, and I can only say that it is soon going to be a reality...

Anyone want to argue with me?

Its the same old story Nox, M$ still trying to control every computer system with their platforms..... it reminds me of when I worked as a Volunteer for AOL....

I went to a party hosted by them for us Volunteers and their mission is pretty damn scary, they basically want to dominate the global internet market, every home will have an AOL Internet product of some description is what they beleive. Eeeek!!

now don't get me wrong...i don't like M$....but you make it sound like CE is gonna be running the whol shebang....which i don't find...i read an article on the subject, and it sounds like it's gonna be something else, sorta like bmw's i-drive system.....now as for bsod....it sounds like it has that covered (and it doesn't mention if that would affect the drivability of the car)....the automotive public wouldn't allow for a car to completely controlled by a tangible OS (just like they won't allow for steer by wire systems) anywho...here's a snippet.

About Windows CE for Automotive
Microsoft Windows CE for Automotive is an operating system built on Windows CE technology to make possible new categories of in-car computers that are capable of safely providing drivers and passengers with hands-free communication, access to personalized information on the Internet, the ability to summon emergency services and roadside assistance, and an array of convenience and entertainment applications. Windows CE for Automotive is an
open platform that allows developers to quickly create powerful in-car computing solutions. It offers flexibility and choice of computing platforms, hardware peripherals and software components, as well as a large community of developers familiar with Windows CE development practices.

Ok ok ok, so I might have exaggerated it to some extent...
The scary part is that the M$ car is here...

i'm not excited about that movement in that direction. I've read articles on replacing entire subsytems (automotive) with network systems (using cat 5 and all that jazz). But there's other issues I put first in priority. I mean I could handle a car running some m$ os (in the article is specifically mentions what CE Automotive will do with crashes and so forth)...but think more towards privacy...Now this isn't specifically m$, but more so poised at OBD3 and beyond. What some propsitions have been made at the capabilities will be...such as sending information (like your speeding) to a police station, or the ability to shut your car down from a remote location....now of course it doesn't do that, but the ability is there (programming and so forth)...The article I read about this was in car & driver or road & track (i can't remember now)....but this also leads into "onstar" and other systems like that (which also brings us back around to CEa), because it all has that ability....but what's nice is that CEa is open source...which means hacking will be prevelant!!!!

I could probably go on longer...but i have some training to goto...
