Building live chat customer support for free

Does anybody know how to implement an online customer support Instant messaging system? We're looking for a simple live chat solution that we can implement for free. The customer shouldn't have to sign up for anything, just click, the IM should load and our rep should start receiving messages (no frills needed).

Has anybody seen articles or directions on how to do this?

As of few days ago, I am learning java and its applets, and from what I see it is exactly what you want, so look for some java chats, I've seen plenty around while looking for articles.

If you go out to www.sourceforge.net and search for chat, browser, java or combinations thereof, you can find several open source projects that might help you get started or give you ideas.

I arbitrarily chose one of them. Its description follows:

ARSC is a webchat system that uses PHP and MySQL and allows comfortable chatting with every browser on the surface of this planet, using JavaScript, frames and server push / socket server on modern browsers down to a one-page reload-yourself lynx version.

Development Status: 5 - Production/Stable
Environment: Console (Text Based), No Input/Output (Daemon), Web Environment
Intended Audience: Other Audience
License: GNU General Public License (GPL)
Natural Language: English, German
Operating System: OS Independent
Programming Language: PHP
Topic: Chat

You guys are great, thanks for the advice. I was just invenstigating Parachat Java based chat software. However the free version comes with nasty pop up ads which won't work in the customer support environment.

I'll go over to soucreforge and take a look thank you.
