One of the best books I've ever read about C++ is by Bruce Eckel. What's really great about it is its free for download.

well, then you should check out the information on the M$ site and MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network).
For the books: I can give you an advice about which book not to buy:
1. c++ for dummies, Stephen Randy Davis, IDG books Worldwide, 2000
About the Microsoft Press books: they are good but you are probably better of with this:
Beginning C++, Horton, Wrox press.
I haven't read that one but I am busy with Horton's beginning Java 2 which is quite good.

Well, we simply got no choice. For games and most other programs you still have to use M$. Not that linux can't handle it, but because there are simply not enough products. However, this is changing, wine ("a Windows compatibility layer for Linux", some kind of emulator) is getting better and more stuff is getting ported to the Linux.
But for servers, UNIX has been popular enough for quite some time ;-).
