Question C/C++/C# forums

I was thinking, as the C-language family is very popular throughout the world, and widely discussed could it be possible to open a forum for it. I'm, of course, speaking only for my behalf, but a lot of Perl and PHP (and other) programmers have C background. It might be very useful to have such a forum. What do you think?

What a magnificent comment
Anyway, thanks daholy. I'm glad at least someone liked the idea. Maybe it'll get better support in future.

Hehe. Actually I find it a bit strange for an open-source embracing website of this (devshed.com) nature not to have a C/C++ forum. Not having a C# forum is understandable

I can relate to the missing on C#, of course, I just brought it to the discussion 'cause C/C++ are someone slightly related to it. C# is something from middle of VB, Java, and C++. I located a site on C/C++ the other day and their forum discusses C# just like they discuss C and C++. It's called Cprogramming.com.

Yeah Datamike i use the Cprogramming.com site sometimes it's got some great tutorials

DevShed could do with a C++ forum it would encourage more people to take a look at the language

I have VC++ 6.0 which is great tool, but just out of curiosity i tried installing gcc-2.95 on my WIN box but i need a sed enviroment setup and i don't no if it's worth the trouble

gcc-2.95 is a great free compilier but it's difficult to install you have to

configure
make
make install

You can do a BAT install on a WIN BOX through a DOS console but you need a sed enviroment

Marky_Mark, grab the Cygwin distro with a gcc binary.

Datamike, certainly it would be great to have a forum to discuss such a popular language. The question is just whether there are enough C-pros (and interested newbies) here. Also, DevShed is imho rather aimed towards web development than traditional application development.

Marky_Mark, I would agree with realnowhereman. Get Cygwin. It comes with gcc and it is nice to have the majority of the unix commands available on a windoze box. I set my path to include the cygwin/bin directory so now I am able to grep files among other things.

As far as the forum, it would always be nice to have another place that could discuss C/C++ issues.

Granted, devshed is aimed toward 'traditional' web development, that is, browsers, servlets, applets, etc... But one of the initiatives of C# and the related .NET project is web services. So, I think soon, web development will be shifting toward stand-alone* apps that are web-enabled. These apps will likely be written in languages like C#, C++, or Java, so I don't think such a forum would necessarily be anathema to this site. The other thing I'd like to say is that although C# has been pioneered by Microsoft, it is not restricted to that platform:

http://www.go-mono.com/c-sharp.html
(the ximian C# compiler was just recently able to compile itself)

*By stand-alone I mean apps that don't need a browser.

Better than cygwin, just get Linux

Marky_Mark: Yeah, the site is great. I also Visual C++ 6.0 but I also use Dev-C++ compiler. It's free and you can get it from Bloodshed Software.

Yes, I noticed the new forums. Fantastic, I thought it wouldn't happen. I hope it succeeds, I know I'll be there everyday. C++ is a great langauge, and I think it is especially good for Perl and PHP developers to start with it 'cause both are related to it. So the syntax itself is easy to learn.

realnowhereman: I was also worried that there might not be enough people with intrest or not enough of people to help others. All I can now is pray, since it was my idea to start the forum I fear for my head it doesn't succeed

Lets hope people will take it up.

Eh... Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Devshed.com a site geared towards webdevelopment? Since when did C/C++ become languages for web development? And how the hell can you create a forum for C# and C/C++ when C# probably has more in common with Java than the two others?!

Java is extremely widespread for webrelated stuff, and C# is geared towards the same niche, so if you should create any new forums it should be for these two.

Anyway, if you're serious about C/C++, check out the usenet groups for these languages, that's where you'll find the people with decades of experience...

Depends on what level of web development you're looking at. What do you think Google was written in?

Syntactically true. I don't see how you'd dump C and C++ in one forum, to be honest. They're different.

Well, we have PHP newsgroups as well, so why are we posting on here in the first place? You can't slag this forum off /that/ easily..
