some hosting companies will get you a domain for free when you signup with them but if you leave them you have to start paying for it. So it is not really free. That is the only way that I know of though.

Well if you look around you might be able to find someone that offers free domain based on some sort of rewards program. I have seen them before but never used them.
The other way is if you can hack the root servers then you can edit their config files to include your own domain. Good luck, ![]() |

.tk domains don't work very well and they are hiding lots of pop-ups
there are a lot of free subdomain providers like eu.int, .cjb etc |

I can think of very good reason to pay for the domain. You own it.
There will be no hidden clauses that would make you lose whatever it was should it gain popularity. |

Godaddy has always been good to us, and you cant beat their prices.

Beware
If you get your domain name free through your hosting company, make sure that it is registered in your name and not theirs.
As for registrars GoDaddy all the way. Theyre not free but they have some of the lowest prices around. |

another
another cheap one is namebargain.com (8.88). I have over 100 with them and they are helpful, and professional. Maybe you have to register at least 5 first time - can't remember.
However, back to the free option. I know someone(where's the 'vague' smilie) who registered something for free in the (very) early days of the web and has kept it for years, and I'm wondering if it's simply a paperwork issue that you're paying for - I'll try to find out. I'd be interested if someone knows too - 8.88 isn't much but 8.88 x 100 every year. Adds up. |

Sometimes you can get domain free with hosting but then you have to pay for the hosting. But all those free domain companies two years ago have either gone the way of the buffalo or changed to paying services.
