Introvert/Extrovert? How much do you like people?

An article-inspired poll.

Caring for your introvert: http://wiki.chad.org/wiki.pl?CaringForYourIntrovert

I am an introvert. While that seems to be the typical programmer case, I was curious what the highly scientific devshed poll could come up with.

Introvert in most cases, actually quite wild , outgoing, and annoying with those I really know. Lucky them...

i guess that's true for most of us; true for me. i'm usually reserved with most other people but totally a different person with my inner circle of friends.

Same here - introvert with most people.

Interesting thing - up until today 'introvert' was just another word for 'shy' to me. Now when I've read that link, as well as a couple of other things, I am going to say that I am an introvert and proud of it. Problem with this word is that for most people it has very negative connatation so it's not a compliment to be called "introvert". I don't mind extroverts - my girlfriend is one - but I just find them to irrational and their actions are without any thought. Not to say that everything should be logic and make sense, but it has to be based on something.

I like spending quality time with people, but not too much. I don't ask for advice and I don't give one. If something happens, I'll keep it to myself and think about it several times and won't tell anyone untill I've come up with conclusion why it happened and what it means. I don't take every word as gospel and things don't affect me much at time when they happen. Some call me closed and even narrow minded. Reality is - lets face it - we are just calm, balanced, rational and happy people.

P.S. this is quite funny and truthful -> http://users.erols.com/beachkitty/lexicon.html

I'm not, thank you very much. HAPPY !!! wargh, that's probably one of the worst things that could happen to me. Besides that i'm quite calm and happy.

My introvertnes tends to vary. But a'm always rational and balanced in the end. I think that that's one of the prerequisites of us computer-people.

I kinda agree with bcyde... Introverted, but quite OTT with people I know. I also have a major childish streak, which I have to keep hidden unless I'm with people I really know.

I like the article.

Wow, between the article and the comments by the rest of you, it pretty much described me perfectly.

I figured there'd be a strong introvert showing here, but no extroverts talleyed? That does surprise me. We all talk here a lot, but I wonder what putting all of us in a big room with one another would do. Be like one of those spaghetti westerns where we all just stare each other down

Introvert here too, although I never knew it until I read that article, I think the first paragraph summed me up pretty well although I am not so bad on the scowling and growling but I do have my moments.

This got me:

"(He is also supposed to have said, "If you don't say anything, you won't be called on to repeat it." The only thing a true introvert dislikes more than talking about himself is repeating himself.) "

I just had to laugh because it describes me perfectly and I have come to notice it more now than ever being married to someone who's second language is English and is forever asking me to repeat what I say.

Amusing article.
Quote:
after an hour or two of being socially "on," we introverts need to turn off and recharge

Bingo. Perfect description. I don't have any problems being social, I enjoy it, however it's exhausting for me. I love being around people, I don't avoid social activities, but I do need my personal time.

Are introverts arrogant? Hardly. I suppose this common misconception has to do with our being more intelligent, more reflective, more independent, more level-headed, more refined, and more sensitive than extroverts.

Heh, that had me cracking up though.

Extroverts are energized by people, and wilt or fade when alone. They often seem bored by themselves, in both senses of the expression. Leave an extrovert alone for two minutes and he will reach for his cell phone. In contrast, after an hour or two of being socially "on," we introverts need to turn off and recharge.

It's weird... but ALL of this describes me. I do tend to 'wilt or fade' when I'm alone for too long. But then sometimes when I'm with a group of friends, I just feel like I gotta be alone for a while. Maybe I'm just messed up beyond repair

I'm pretty good when I'm around my friends, but my folks had a bunch of people over tonight and it drove me nuts. People everywhere. Loud people I didn't know, all over the house, on every floor. It was raining, I couldn't go outside. I was parked in, I couldn't leave. No escape! Makes me want to stay up all night to enjoy the newfound solitude. Got DI's chillout stream going, I'm good for the night

And everyone needs some people time, it just take far more hours of solitude to need to be around people than the need to hide when surrounded.

My nickname growing up: "Hermit". Given to me by my mom and sisters. Before I was 10, I spent all my time in my bedroom drawing and reading. After 10, I spent all my time in my bedroom programming. If I ever got into trouble, I don't know what my mom would have done to punish me. The worse thing she ever did to me was make me sit in the living room and watch TV with the rest of the family.

Today, I only have one person I'd call a RL friend. My wife. I never go out and socialize, I rarely even visit my own family. If it wasn't for my wife pushing me out the door, I'd never see sunlight at all. (not counting my commute to work) Hehe

Online I have a few friends. But I can count them all on one hand. I'm a whole lot more social online.

Dog: The extreme introvert.
