carp subject , so shoot me
http://forums.devshed.com/t53443/s7...0390313f54.html
I was replying to this, unconcerned that I may have wasted 2 seconds of my life guessing at the thread contents. the reply failed cos the thread was closed. so i posted a follow up anyway because I thought that closing the thread for a first time ofence ..it was his/her first post was a bit OTT. especially when you see how much of a beginner he/she is (probably did not even know what subject to use) anyway so that got deleted. So we have FreeBSD savaging all in sight in the Apache forum (its where I send peeps I dont like to give them a scare) - and now ... well I dont know what , I know these things annoy but what sort of welcome is that to a forum ? how hard is it to say , `[please](optional) don't do this next time`... if they continue, and I know there are serial offenders its a different matter. If noobs want to be treated like kak they can go to IRC, thats what its for. |

Yes - I am the culprit or villian.
I actually tried to merge your reply into the thread to avoid your time wasting, but it failed (DS spiked on me, when it finally came up I chose the wrong switch on the select), so sorry about your reply. But as far as the closed post go's, I believe it is appropriate - as I stated in the PM. The problem is its easy for all of us to tell a person to read the rules; it's another question if they do. I have personally seen in the past members directing attention to the sticky thread, and that person has replied with an 'ok, I read it' - only for that same person a few threads later to post another thread that breaks the community rules -> Why, because they never read it in the first place, hell, they got what they wanted so they had no need to read the sticky thread. If we look back on threads that I have closed, you will notice that same person has continued to post in the community, only correctly - so it does work and in the end, accomplishes our objectives which is to keep the forum clean and easy to follow, search, etc.. Another issue is the flame wars that happen. When someone gets redirected to the sticky, we have seen in the past flame wars erupt from this. A closing of the thread prevents this. Do any of you have a different take on this? Lets hear em.... PS: I thought I was polite in that thread - I said Thank You...

After reading that post, I gotta agree with jpenn on that one. I thought that the reply fit well, wasn't harsh or impolite. Just my two cents :-)

I don't think it's right to close the thread if it's the user's first post. I mean, if I needed help and I was a complete noobie, I wouldn't sit there and try to find rules to follow. I would completely ignore the sticky because I would think that it wasn't posted for me...
BUT, if there are repeat violators, then yes, lock it down. My Solution. Politely tell the first time violator to read the rules and let someone answer the question. And by the way, a CARP (like in the subject bar) is a kind of fish. They are really big and they taste nasty. They live in many Kentucky ponds and lakes and clean the bottoms. Just trying to start some beef. ![]() Last edited by SammyK : February 26th, 2003 at 03:03 PM. |

I understand the resoning behind closing posts with undescriptive titles... its not something that bothers me personally but I appreciate it bothers some.
But closing the dudes first ever post I still think was OTT, everyone should get a chance , saying 'read the rules' ... well I never read them, nor do I actully read the TOC in most forums , just like I dont read MS licensing terms , who does? I dunno, perhaps even with a warning the dude would have continued to post with dodgy titles I dont know , perhaps he/she will post again here ? I dunno that either. After all these are supposed to be 'help' forums. So personally I think a quick warning about the improper thread title would have sufficed, IMO anyway. |
