I don't know if you've ever used Microsofts Visual Studio but Microsoft software has compilation options such as optimise for pentium pro etc...

That's why Intel sell the chip as an optimiser for the latest Microsoft software so you are wrong when you say that software can't be optimised for the latest Intel chips

Microsoft's .NET will probably have similar options that allow compilation of new software to be optimised for the latest Intel architecture

Where did I say that?

"Will probably" and "might" aren't reasons to spend extra TODAY.

Cool whew!

This thread has quickly become "heated"!

A note on optimizing software on a "per chip" basis:

I used to use Intel chips up until soon after the whole MMX thing came out. When I purchased software MMX-"optimized" software for my PII that wouldn't work in MMX-optimized mode (after buying a new motherboard and new PII chip), that's when I knew I got ripped. Maybe it was the software, but if the "software of tomorrow" won't work with the "technology of tomorrow," then what next?

I bought my first AMD (pre-K6 -- AMD133 i think?) soon after that and haven't purchased another Intel desktop since. I'm on a 650MHz Atlhon (classic, not Tbird) desktop now, and it seriously outperforms my 800Mhz PIII laptop with the same amount of memory. It saddens me deeply...

But seriously, my next step-up will definitely be to a dual-Athlon, not anything Intel (although I wish there was more out there in the way of dual-AMD motherboards -- any suggestions for sites/mfgs with AMD-dualies?)

Thanks,
TotalMonkey!

(ps by "mfgs" i meant "manufacturers" not "mofuggas")

The only AMD approved MBs are the Asus A7M266-D and the Tyan Thunder K7 (S2462)

Chuffed is a good or bad thing? You ended up going with and AMD chip?

According to my sweet little Babylon tool:
'chuffed' - London slang:
very happy, delighted.

I was reading an article about this in one of my copies of PC PRO.

They are basically the same, but no one ever gets fired for buying Intel.

I personnally go for intel ever since my friend phoned up AMD complain his chip was running close to 100 degrees and they said that was normal.

And how does that matter if the chip is stable?

It's possible that your friend measured the temperature wrong, is overclocking without a clue, doesn't have enough case fans, or that the chip is manufactured to handle those temperatures.

This is a really pointless reason to avoid AMD.

Apart from the fact that they work faster when chips are cooler

I'm assuming you mean 100C NOT 100F as 100F would be fine. Are you sure the tech support person knew you meant 100C? What kind of cooling? What chip exactly?
