CMYK images in Explorer

I realize that CMYK is not the right format for the web, but...
I have set up a download images section for a client and the images that go in there are CMYK because they are for print. In NN4.7 they come up enough that you can see what the picture is but it is in BW and has lines through it. In MSIE 5 I get a little red circle with an x through it. The client (who is also on a mac running MSIE 5) gets the image to come up after a very long time and it is stretched to fit his MSIE window. My client's client (PC with MSIE 5) is getting the red circle with the x too. Is there any way to get a CMYK image to come up in MSIE 5 just enough to get a preview of the image.

I don't know much about the different colour formats, but you can try making your preview a RGB JPG, and the download in CMYK.

that is probably what I am going to have to do.

If I had to guess, you're doing web-based proofing of roughs and comps hence the 4/c files.

I think you need to bite the bullet and create an RGB thumbnail, or, a full-size RGB version of the file. If you can create the CMYK file and you're in a prepress/design environment (as am I) you must certainly have Photoshop and can generate the file both ways. You can automate this by creating an Action that generates that saves the CMYK JPEG, converts to RGB mode and saves the RGB JPEG.

JPEGs support CMYK (4-channel) images but web browsers don't so you get the inconsistent support depending on which browser you use. I think IE does it correctly: Shows a missing image icon. What Netscape shows implies that the file is corrupt when it's not since you can "kinda" make out the image.
