Here I go opening a can of worms, BUT...
I have a site that I would like to put current news of a certain subject on. I get that news from all over the web. At the bottom of the main page as well as on a page of its own I display the headlines and then the story if they click on the headline. How can I go about making sure that I don't infringe on their copyright? I hate to send people to other pages, can I put at the top and bottom of the story, "copyright CNN or whatever"? Where can I go to get more information on this? Thanks ~Matt |

My experience has been that most Web sites
really do not mind you linking to and even posting their info on your Web site. They usually would appreciate a link bacc to their site - use a popUp window or _blank. Also, a good idea is to solicit permission from the desired source before commencing. For info on copyright, intellectual property, etc., visit: http://www.loc.gov/ |

Thanks for teh input and link. My main sources I have contacted and they said no problem, but I do get stories from the mainstream media as well, and it's pretty hard to get anyone at those companies. I was thinking about a link at the top and bottom of the story, next to their copyright info that would be target=_blank to let them go directly to the story if they so chose.
Thanks again, this puts my mind at ease. I'd hate to have worked on this site for over a year to get it all right, and then get it shut down to something like that... ~Matt |

Most large sites have a copyright statement that explicitly spells out how you may use their content and what requirements there are if you do.
Instead of contacting them, check if they have this statement on their site.
