December 21, 2012 - End of the world or what..?
Hello everyone,
Just for "fun", what does everything think about 12/21/2012 being the End of the world as so many prophets have perdicted? I mean you can not turn on the TV here in the US these days without finding some program talking about it or what might happen and etc. Honestly it is my thought that if there is something that day, it would be the most likely time for terrorists or some nut-job to attack. So for me I will take a day off from work myself, keep the kids home from school and just play it safe that day. I rather be safe than sorry, so what does everyone else think?

That very well might be true, but there is always a chance that someone or some organization might use it as a stepping off point to capitalize on the moment to push some political agenda...terroristic event...! That is more of my fear than the the world ending or such.

And the tooth fairy might decide to go on strike.
Not trying to belittle any fears that you may have, but in all honesty almost any terrorist cabal/group/sect/'bunch of nutters' will have plenty more dates that have actual meaning for/to them than a 'random' date extrapolated from a Mayan calendar system.

I don't watch much tv other than sports, news and the sprout channel but it seems like there's not as many people saying the end is here now that it's here as there were a year or more ago when it was the distant future instead of this month.
I have to work that day, so if the apocalypse happens it would be nice if it would wait until after 6:00pm so I can spend my last moment on earth at home with my son.
Otherwise I'm pretty much assuming the world will not end, because if it does then Santa won't come on 12/25 and leave all the cool stuff I just bought ... I mean all that cool stuff his elves made ... in China. And that would suck.
Ho ho ho ...

I truly wish I could just stay locked in my home the whole day; but I have a final exam at Uni and a holiday luncheon at work both on the 21st. I hope it's not too crazy. :|

It's also the birthday of my first fiance. I've had two of those. Never actually married though ... (she'll be 44 I believe)

Well if the world does end you might have an excuse for not attending the luncheon, depending on time zone factors of course.

Well, the luncheon is at noon, and my final is at 2:00 PM, so if the end of the world does in fact happen, it'd be pretty nice for it to fall right between those two.

I look forward to the mass suicides. Weed out the weakest links in the population, so to speak.

Now please do not misunderstand me, I do not believe the world is going to end, BUT I could see someone like a Terroist trying to do something on that date to help foster confusion and discord hoping to maximize on the End of the World fear factor in the hopes of instilling more fear. So just to make sure, I will be taking that day off and keeping my kids home that day. Besides it is the weekend before Christmas and there will be plenty of stuff to do anyway.

I'd be especially careful of Christian Terrorists. The sort of folks that are otherwise busy breeding red heifers and bombing abortion clinics ...

Gotta love the "prophet for profit" business. Pick any ancient runes you like and apply whatever pseudo science you like to 'prove' your conclusions. If you can't find any mystic scribble, just write your own. A few hours work, and you're up and running.
The only tricky part is picking a date. You don't want anything within the next 6 months, because all the laughing from the previous failure won't have died down yet. Nor do you want it decades away, otherwise you just won't be able to stoke the media feeding frenzy to get a decent return on the book and DVD publishing you've got planned. 2015 to 2017 seems like a good bet (mmm, a meta prediction - predicting when the next EoW prediction will be).
Get yourself declared a 'church' (or just hijack an existing one) and all of a sudden you're in nice tax exempt territory as well - lovely.
Once your "flock" is on board, you can set about fleecing them.

Yeah, this is the thousandth time the world is going to end, there's nothing special about this date other than the fact that it's not newly discovered like the last 3 biblical apolcalypses (apocalypi?).
I wouldn't worry too much about a terrorist attack, either. The people who believe in the Mayan apocalypse are usually not all that invested in any one philosophy anyway. With Christmas coming up, the only real attacks we'll see in the US are vandalism of religious or non-religious symbols that make christians angry. The new atheist billboard in times square should be vandalized before the weekend.
Usually, Christmas time marks a decline in the actual terrorist attacks in the US like the bombings of medical clinics and mosques. They remember santa/jesus is watching and stop blowing people up for a few weeks.
