Delayed shutdown on a Dell
I'm using a Dell Optiplex GX24 w/ a 1.8 GHz P4 running windows 2000 here at work, and I was wondering if there is a way to make it turn off when I push the power button without having to hold the button for 5 seconds. I thought there was a BIOS setting for this, but if there is I can't seem to find it. Since I need to physically shutdown the computer every time (the "shutdown computer" option closes windoze, then hangs with a blinking cursor) it would save me hours in total time over the course of my job
Thanks for any help

I think you usually set that sort of thing up in Windows through the "Power Options" in the control panel.

The only thing I see in the Power Options menu is under Advanced-->When I press the power button on my computer: poweroff/standby. I have power off selected, but it still doesn't shut down. I'm starting to think the problem is more than just a setting. Thanks for the suggestion though, I hadn't checked that to be sure.

I think it has to do with ACPI: either lack of support/driver/configuration in the bios or in windows. That new of a system shouldn't have any problems, though. Maybe more info here: http://www.acpi.info/ (just the first google hit, haven't read it).

I looked at that, but it was a bit over my head for the most part (writing and compiling assembly language is not something I can do). From reading the documentation, ACPI configuration may be related (Dell isn't listed as an adopter?) to the problem, but if it is, I can't fix it.
Thanks for the info though ![]() |
