deleting cookies
Hi,

I have two folders in my windows folder: Cookies and Temporary Internet Files. When I ran out of disc space, windows prompted me to delete the files in Temporary Internet Files, which I did. To free up more disc space, can I delete all the cookies in the Cookies file too, or will that cause problems?

Typically, the only problem you will have when you delete all your cookies, is that any site you instructed to "remember" your "preferences" will no longer "remember" them.

i dont think removig cookies folder would do any good,
they hardly take 1 mb !!

i have as much as 382 cookies and size is 192 kb.

i think he would have to really SURF to get big cookie directory ?

hey 7stud, check the directory size and let us know !!!

Well, again, not necessarily. There are many more factors than what you are taking into consideration. For instance, if his drive is not NTFS formatted, and it's 2 GB in size, his block size is 4 KB. This means that the smallest file he can possibly have is 4 KB. Thus, 382 cookies all of a sudden becomes 1.5 MB. I'll let you do the math for the 64 KB block size required by larger drives. So, although I agree with you that 7stud should check the actual size before deleting it (to see if it would be worth it), it would also be a good idea to not assume anything.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I have 272 KB in the Cookies folder, but everyday at least once, I get a prompt telling me that I am out of disk space and to delete my temp internet files.

Why is there even a Cookies folder? Why aren't the cookies in there, in the Temporary Internet Files folder instead?

(win98, IE 5.5)

How big (should I say small) is your hard drive?

272kb should not make one bit of difference.
Try deleting some other files from your hard drive.

How much space did you allocate for you browsers temporary folder?
(Tools > Internet Options > Settings ...)

That's interesting. I have Win2K and IE 5.5 and mine are in the Temporary Internet Files folder (under Internet Explorer Cache). How much drive space are you setting aside for swap? Is it possible that is where you're running out of space? How much RAM do you have? Have you also gotten this error message when you have no other apps (other than IE) running?
