Devshed and NTP
I'm amused by the way that devshed gladly announces the time (GMT) at the bottom of the forums - but it's wrong. Only about 5 mins out by my reconning, but wrong none the less.
I'm synched with ntp on all my boxen. I always sync with rolex.ripe.net in my startup scripts and I'd suggest to Randy and Zeus that it only takes a couple of minutes to get it right. christo

Don't you have anything better to do with your time? ![]() |

Actually, DevShed time is configured to the Atomic Clock. Kind of hard to say that the Atomic Clock is wrong.

We sync our time with time.nist.gov. If we're wrong, they're wrong!

Your box is off, christo.

You only sync at startup? How often is the box rebooted? Over time it could be off by several minutes, as you are seeing. You should sync at least once a day.

How do you sync your time using Linux? I have RedHat on one box and Slackware on the other (I doubt that it matters though).
I think it would be cool to do it like every day at 3AM using CRON. Is that what you guys do? If so, how? Thanks ![]() |

ntpdate *yourserver*
For server just pick one from any ntp list. I use timeserver.cs.umb.edu and got it from http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock1a.html

An atomic clock only means that a second will always be a second even 100 years from now. The correct time still has to be properly configured. BTW, the Big Ben in London is as accurate as an atomic clock! For the past ~70 years they haven't touched the mechacism (except for a motor that adds tension to the spring) and at exactly noon everyday it rings. |
