DevShed connection problem?

Is anyone else experiencing a hard time connecting to the DevShed forums? Often I just get a blank screen with "Cannot find ...etc". My internetconnection seems to be working well since I can visit other sites (up-to-date, so no cache) and email, msn, etc. is working fine.

Devshed?!??? Connection problems??!??! No way!

pffff. forums.devshed.com is going down - not in good sense of it - quite often especially for past 6-7 months. Couple times they changed servers, then I think providers, then something else happened. All in all - it aint no "99.9% uptime guaranteed"

*note to self: add forums.devshed.com to monitoring list and nagios*

yeah, but let's also raise a glass to ourselves (and the mods). Afterall it's the community of individual contributors that makes this such a cool place.

So still a 'bah!' to deadshed's sysadmin

Cheers...

I will definitely raise a glass (root beer for me) to the community members and mods. You deserve all the credit for making this a great forum.

I believe we have solved the problems. We had a really hard time pinning them down. They seem to have stemmed from a couple things:

1. A weird bug in our zope / zeo setup occasionally changes the permissions / ownership on some cache files, making them unreadable by the zope clients. We have a cronjob checking the permissions every minute and changing them if necessary. Hopefully we'll find a permanent fix soon.

2. A bug in the phpAds(new) CVS shapshot we were running was causing some Apache processes to use most of our cpu when the program was doing regularly scheduled maintenence. Because we run a number of hosts on that apache process, we had a hard time pinning down which host or script was causing the bloat. We upgraded to the latest stable version yesterday and haven't had a problem since.

I appreciate the emails we've recieved with reports of site problems... please keep them coming. Hopefully they will now be few and far between. I wish we had a dedicated server for each host we use, but it's just not in the budget at this time. Instead, we get to learn how to optimize the heck out of stuff, and that's more fun anyways

Thanks,

Randy

Randy, what would it take to move forums.devshed.com to 3rd party (non-infowest) box?

$ mostly. It's a possibility, but I think we have a handle on our problems now. Let's give it a week and see if that fixes things.

Ok, but if $ is out of the picture? Can we see some numbers eg speed/bandwidth for forums.devshed.com? It's quite possible I can put it on one of my boxes - top quality fast bandwidth in north-east of the states.
