Had this idea from an earlier post but rather than just doing it let's first see who would be interested in this.
I for one would! I'm currently crunching seti WU but I always could jump into rc5 or anything else. I have a duallie so it'l be great! ![]()

Hi,
Ummm perhaps it would help if you elaborated a little on your idea. I mean it's the first time I have heard it described like this and I have been subscribed to seti for a little while, as far as forming a team, what would it achieve? Isn`t seti the only system of it's kind still running at the moment?? I know there were a few when all this started, cancer research etc. Are there more running now? Define exactly what you are thinking and you might get a better response. I will vote when I hear more ![]()

Well first once you join the "Devshed team" on any of those project you will simply do that same thing as usual except that your credits will be summed with all of those in the same team. They will be compared to those of other groups to well... compete.
![]() RC5 and seti@home is basically the same thing, community crunching data. The thing with RC5 on the other hand is to decrypt a message the hard way, try every key until the right one is found. With seti@home you never loose your credits as a group or individual so there's nothing to loose. I believe that certain projects give out rewards (money!) if we would be the leading team but there's a long way to get there! Any interested! |

Here are some links with some information on them:
Seti@home Decode satelite data (like the kind you saw on contact) and attempt to locate radio waves. OGR and RC5 (both on same webpage because you use the same client) Both are for code breaking. United Devices This DC (distributive computing) project is for the fight against cancer. There are several others just like it, but I'm not going to rattle off unless you all are interested. The basic overview, for those that havent done any DC projects before, is that you download a client device on your machine and install it. It then (if youre connected to the net at the moment) will download some packets of information and decode them in your computers spare time. Its basically for those of you that leave your pc running all day and wish to have it do something productive. Its also a good benchmarking tool for those of you that are tech heads like myself. |

Well, as long as it's for a good cause (not breaking some code I ain't interested in
) I might give it a try. I once, a long time ago, ran seti but I stopped since the program back then used 100% CPU power all the time and I didn't want my PC to die on me fast. Dunno how that is these days??

Mirax,
You can adjust the ammount of processing power your computer gives forth in the seti project. That isnt a problem at all. As for your computer dying out on you due to 100% usage of your processor, that is but a misplaced worry brother. I garentee that your computer will not die out on you. My knowledge of PHP is extremely beyond the point of amature, but my Technical knowledge of computers is quite vast. My computer (a watercooled AMD xp1800+, overclocked to a 2200+ speed) used to run SETI@Home and the Entropia project at the same time. The average processor has a lifespan of 10 years. If you overclock you reduce that lifespan by 1/4-1/2, so says most tech pages. I have an old PIII 450 acting as my PDC at home that is overclocked 600mhz and has been ever since 1999. It runs SETI@home, while acting as my firewall, proxy, PDC, and DNS. That box is comming up on being 4 years old and is still going strong. When I say "box", I literally mean box. It resides in an old CAT5 box, with everything mounted to the sides of it, except the powersupply, thats free floating. I'm in the USAF, and my job is a System Administrator. Most of our Servers in our server room run at 100% day in and day out. Some of them are PII boxes, kinda sad, but it shows you the resiliance of processors. Our ISS (not IIS, ISS) box is an old PII. That constantly scans for weaknesses, causing it to run at full power. Its been standing since early 98. So no worries brother, your PC is meant to take a beating -Jim Last edited by Hiten Mitsurugi : September 24th, 2002 at 08:08 AM. |
