On any linux box with the perl LWP modules installed, you can type:
Code:
[dan@masslegal dan]$ HEAD www.devshed.com 200 OK Connection: close Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 01:16:28 GMT Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 01:16:28 GMT Accept-Ranges: none ETag: Server: Zope/(Zope 2.6.1 (source release, python 2.1, linux2), python 2.1.3, freebsd4) ZServer/1.1b1 Content-Length: 642 Content-Type: text/html Last-Modified: Tue, 08 Apr 2003 16:33:07 GMT Client-Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 01:16:27 GMT Client-Peer: 216.190.27.221:80 Client-Response-Num: 1 Ms-Author-Via: DAV That should be most linux boxes, nowadays. You can also use wget: Code:
[dan@masslegal dan]$ wget -S www.devshed.com --21:19:35-- http://www.devshed.com/ => `index.html' Resolving www.devshed.com... done. Connecting to www.devshed.com[216.190.27.221]:80... connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 1 HTTP/1.0 200 OK 2 Server: Zope/(Zope 2.6.1 (source release, python 2.1, linux2), python 2.1.3, freebsd4) ZServer/1.1b1 3 Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 01:19:36 GMT 4 Connection: Keep-Alive 5 Content-Type: text/html 6 Etag: 7 Content-Length: 25317 100%[==============================================>] 25,317 59.29K/s ETA 00:00 21:19:36 (59.29 KB/s) - `index.html' saved [25317/25317] [dan@localhost dan]$ both of which almost always give you the OS of the target server, as well as other interesting info. |

No no, the God part only last's during the conversation where you explain not everything on the Internet costs a fortune, once you get down to work converting their internal systems from IIS to Apache, dealing with all the questions especially the one 'How come it costs us this much for you to convert when there are no license fee's'? and you really feel like hittin the technical prat who told the company that IIS was the best platform, especially when he is over your shoulder every five seconds because he doesnt trust a word you say, asking question after question like a five year old child with a degree at some poncy college which says he's an expert yet he has only ever worked in one company for X years and his knowledge of the outside world is like non existent because he is so drugged up on the IIS M$ drug, his eyes are red and he looks like an axe ... you get the picture, life is no roses

You have to laugh to keep from crying. IIS is quite possibly... actually, it's definitely the worst web server out there. The thing that irritates me the most is the off occasion when I have to write scripts for IIS for a client. WTF is with automatic permissions???? Like MS knows what permissions I want on a script more than I do! |

Actually, all I write for is IIS. I've never had any issues with it. It takes longer to download PHP than it does to install it. I've never had any issues bringing scripts to IIS from elsewhere or putting my scripts on other servers. As for permissions, if you're using NTFS, then you have the same issues as a *nix server. You have to make sure the IIS user has permission to read/write the files where necessary.
