Does SSL make you more comfortable?

I was just in the process of building yet another site and I have come to a cross roads. I was looking at the logs for a few of the sites which I manage and I noticed that when given an option, people don't seem to care about using SSL encryption on most forms.

Now my question to all of you is:

If given the option to use SSL encryption on a form, which form(s) would you choose to encrypt?

My Opinion: SSL only secures the transfer of the information, it has little to no bearing on how the information is stored, used, or otherwise accessed. So, you are taking a gamble either way. I do however feel that someone who has taken the time to build the security option for users, must care about the users security. Otherwise why go through the paramount effort.

I also would only use SSL for submitting sensitive information regarding my health, finances, or other vital statistics.

Web developers are really the wrong folks to ask about this. You should poll your actual users, I think folks see "SSL" and generally think it secures much more than just the server-to-server communication (most folks don't even get the idea of the web as a client-server connection. . .) if they understand it at all, beyond "the lock means safe" or whatnot.

Actually, the site is going to be geared towards web developers, IT pro's, and programmers so I would like to get the opinions of all of you.

I am just curious if the individuals I mentioned above really care one way or the other. It would save me lots of work, but on the other hand, I dont want sacrifice trust to save time.

Wink

Totally useless unless I'm submitting sensitive data. Given the choice of transmitting passwords in a secured channel I usually don't care (forums, stupid forced reg. site just to view some page, etc as oposed to webmail).

It doesn't matter unless I am paying money somewhere.

And if I'm paying money I won't pay unless SSL is working.
