DVD backup software
Can anyone recommend good software to backup to DVDs? I've got a DVD+RW/+R drive. One feature the software needs to support is spanning of multiple discs.

http://www.alcohol-software.com/ - not sure if it does spanning though. They have a trial version you can download and test. I use the 52% version which is slimmed down from the 120 to burn cd's...

Watch out... MPAA'll getcha for this thread.
I mean, what the hell are you thinking man??? You don't need to backup your DVDs. According to Jack Valenti, they're indestructable. If, somehow, the miraculously brilliant Valenti who happens to know nothing about software, but plenty about lawnmowers, is wrong about DVDs never decaying, the only right YOU have is the right to give them more money. Silly you... thinking you actually OWN the things you BUY. Ha ha ha. That's cute. (tongue firmly set in cheek, of course) |

I mean really! How dare you think you have the right to do things with the items you buy?

Well, he may be using it for system backup purposes. Its nice to be able to do backups in gigabyte's on a single removable medium.

Yea, but this is Jack Valenti were talking about here. You think he wouldn't try to say that anybody that owns a DVD writer isn't stealing movies no matter what they use it for (sort of like how DirecTV says that anybody that owns a smartcard reader is stealing DirecTV no matter what they're really using it for.. even if they don't have DirecTV!)

Alcohol seemed like it was oriented toward copying video DVDs. I didn't really see any information about using it for data. I'm currently trying out Genie Backup Manager.

Have you tried the new version of Nero - just read a review on it in e-week, giving it really good reviews and says it is the most feature rich burning app on the market. I've used the old one in the past, have'nt tried the new one though...

No I haven't. I used Nero for burning CDs on my old computer. The computer crashed every time I burned something, but that might have been a hardware problem. If Nero didn't cause the problems I was having, then I'd say it was pretty good software. If they now have a version that supports DVD and spanning, I'd be interested in looking into it before deciding what software to buy. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try to look into that.
