Forums...
Hi All,
I have decided to broaden my horizons and start learning some new development languages, because of this I thought I would find some new haunts where a specific language is discussed. For example DevShed is primarily PHP, so rather than search for them all by myself I thought I would ask you guys which forums you find useful and for which languages.

The majority of forums I've used/seen are PHP/database-based, however I have also heard of some based in Perl, CGI, or ASP. Those are pretty much the only other options for dynamic content...

I think you missed the point of the question, mttatkns, and there are many, many more ways you can build online applications than that.
Back to the real question: www.perlmonks.org is the best perl forum- probably the best online community for ANY language. |

I'm pretty much posting so I can follow the thread, but I'd like to hear any options for a good ASP forum. While I abhore the language... oh, sorry, ASP isn't a language, it's a... whatever it is... and you use vbscript or whatever... blah blah blah... anyhow... it's unfortunately popular and I've been putting off doing anything with it for too long now.

Same here John, I have put off doing anything in ASP but I think this will be one of the languages I will need to add to my skillset eventually. Thanks for the Perl link, I will check that one out.
Anyone use C/++ forums? I found one at www.cprogramming.com which seems pretty popular, anyone use it from here? |

Mmmmm really? So you wouldn't consider JSP, C/++, Coldfusion, Java as options for developing dynamic content? Those are just a few off the top of my head but there are more than just ASP, CGI, PHP and Perl. |

Yeah, but who really uses JSP? I rarely ever see it.
The Army is big on coldfusion for some reason. I've looked at it, but never really looked into it. From what I've seen, it's expensive to get a system running it, correct? Or is there a "test" version/server you can run at home to develop on? ---John Holmes... |

I have been thinking about dabbling with Delphi or C#...

Actually JSP is more popular than people think, here are a couple of sites I found:
http://www.ed.gov/ http://www.delta.com/ http://www.netscape.com/ http://www.theaa.com/ http://www.games.com/ http://www.bt.com/ It is of course no where near as popular as PHP, ASP, Perl etc, but it has some pretty large scale sites under it's belt. |

Do you think it's one of those "We're going to be a big site, so we have to use JSP because it's Java" type mentalities?
I mainly see it in use on rather large sites, also. Is this because it's good, or just because people think it is? ---John Holmes... |

Well from benchmark tests I saw JSP was one of the lowest performing scripting languages, right down there with CFM

I would have to say yes to this, most of the large corporate projects I have worked on have similar mentalities in that the people at the top know very little yet insist on using a specific technology because they have heard or read something about X technology, thus they go out looking specifically for people who can develop in X technology who are not going to turn around and say, 'Well actually this would be better for this project' especially if they don't have that skillset under their belt. That is one of the biggest problems in todays Internet Market, people tend not to get enough opinion on what is the best technology but adhere to their own preference or some developers preference. A perfect example was when a customer came to me through my SilkPHP web site and requested a quote for a chat application written in PHP and MySQL. Now whilst I know it is possible I sent a reply stating that it isn't the best technology for chat applications and he replied to me very rudly saying that he had read an article on how to create such an application and I didn't know what I was talking about. (I never said it wasn't possible just that in my opinion it wasn't the best solution) Anyway, leavvvvving the subject a little here, any more forums people? I found another which is orientated at Game Developers but has heaps of info on DirectX and C/++ programming down at: www.gamedev.com |
