Ah Ok It was an interesting story, don't think I would have the guts to cut off my own arm. |

i don't think you can just cut it. you'd pass out 10 times before getting through the bone.
it said he used a string to tie it up. so maybe it was numb for a day and all the cells died or something. i don't know. it's still amazing. |

The boulder weighed ~ 1000 lbs and landed on the arm below the elbow. That portion of his arm was crushed... he wouldn't have had to cut thru the bone. He would have had to detach any remaining shreds of flesh, not quite the same thing as cutting thru an intact limb.
Also, wasn't he laying there for ~ 3-4 days before he did this? The pain from the crushed portion of his limb would have been incredible initially, but the body/mind has a way of shutting off or numbing that kind of pain after time. His arm might have been quite numb by that time, especially if he applied his tourniquet a few hours before going to work with his knife. Not saying it was easy, but not as bad as cutting thru a fully intact limb.

Actually, from what I read, he decided within the first few hours that he would have to cut off his arm. But, it wasn't really his full arm; it was a somewhere in the forearm that he had to separate. I think it was actually close to the wrist. The crazy thing was, he had to break his own bones to do it, because he only had a small knife that couldn't cut through the bone. Think of the force it would take to break those two bones in your forearm, while the hand is trapped, so you can't even swing it...
They said he actually did such a good job of it that he didn't lose much blood, and it only took a one-hour operating to seal the wound. That is one determined guy.

Who knows? Early reports conflict with what the ABC story said (as reported by the guy's parents). I imagine some of that story is correct, and some of the earlier story is correct.
I know from personal experience the media RARELY get the facts much more than 70% correct. There are a few things in that story that just don't make sense... |
